In the southwestern part of the state, be sure to visit Badlands National Park. Its moon-like landscape made of chiseled spires, deep canyons, low-slung buttes, and jagged ridges explain how it got the name “badlands”. Formed from millions of years of wind and water erosion, this 244,000-acre area contains one of the world’s richest deposits of fossils from the Oligocene epoch (33-23 million years ago). You may even take part in your own dig in a real-life excavation. Next are the Black Hills Caves consisting of a network cave display with the largest concentrations of passageways found nowhere else in the world. Eight of the caves are open to the public. Jewel Cave, the 2nd longest cave in the world, consists of more than 135 passages so far and gets its name from the glittering crystals of calcite, dogtooth, and nailhead spar. Then visit Wind Cave, which is the 4th longest in the world and contains the largest display of a rare formation called boxwork.

The Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway is a 70-mile drive with lots of breathtaking views of the Black Hills. Drive along hairpin curves, tunnels, and slender granite pinnacles and catch the sight of Mount Rushmore along your journey. Spearfish Canyon State and National Forest Service Scenic Byway is a 20-mile route along US 14A that is flanked by towering limestone cliffs and that cuts through Spearfish Canyon. See beautiful spruce, pine, aspen, birch, and oak trees that offer brilliant, colorful foliage in the autumn season. And Wildlife Loop State Scenic Byway is an 18-mile route in Custer State Park (SD 87 and 16A) that promises to expose you to buffalo, bighorn sheep, antelope, deer, elk, coyote, prairie dogs, and numerous birds.
